Description
Aubusson tapestry, “La Halte des chasseurs” 18th century.
This tapestry, in “entrefenêtre” format, echoes a group of tapestries identified on the theme of country amusements, and more specifically the “Halte des chasseurs” (Hunters’ Halt), whose cartonnier is thought to be Jacques-Nicolas Juillard (1719-1790).
Our model shows a woman sitting on the grass at the foot of a tree, talking to a standing hunter wearing a tricorne, holding his rifle under his arm and accompanied by a dog. A village adorns the background of the composition. This sketch was intended to fit into larger compositions (like a poncifix). This is how we find our characters in other, larger tapestries, such as the one in the Petit Palais Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris (link to “Halte des Chasseurs”).
